2.2 Choosing Marbles Spinner Design!

• How did you decide how to design your spinner?
• The first three statements told me the proportions of the three colours, so I could set them up. The last statement made it possible for blue to occur, so blue had to have an three on it to make blue and three be possible. And the fourth statement encompassed the entire spinner- all colours have to have an odd number, except red. So I decided red might as well be even.
• How did you confirm that your spinner design met the criteria?
• All statements are true, since I used them to create the spinner. They should be correct both ways, but the top paragraph explains how I fulfilled all of them.
• Is there more than one acceptable spinner design?  If so, what will the spinners have in common?  What will be different? 
• Red could have been and odd number. It would still fulfill statement four. Or, if you really thought out of the box, you could say red was both even and odd, by writing two numbers. It is possible.
  
  
  
  
  
  

What do You Expect? Investigation 1

1. Experimental probability is a probability that you have tested. You can't be certain the probability is accurate, as you can never conduct an infinite number of tests, but by rolling a dice fifty times you are probably going to be more accurate with your probabilities than if you took a guess. Conducting the tests (trials) is easy- just repeatedly take the chance, write down your results, and make an average for the chance of the result occurring.

2. 500 is more accurate. Let's say you have a coin that you flip. If you did the test thirty times, you might get anywhere from twenty eight heads to three heads and thereby have an inaccurate result. But if you did the test five hundred times there is a much lower chance of an outlier occurring as there are more flips that can correct a twenty eight heads streak, and turn the chance back toward fifty percent.

3. There are two meanings- if a result has a fifty percent chance of occurring, you could say it is equally likely (to happen and not to happen). But you could also say that if you had a three sided dice (if that was possible), with 1, 2, and 3, then 1 and 2 would also be equally likely to occur- because they both have a 33.3% chance of occurring. Equally likely to occur.

Walking Sticks!

1.  What would you predict would happen to a population of bright green walking sticks that move onto a bamboo thicket? Why do you predict this (use your data)!

In my data, over the first three generations, all bright green insects and all brown insects went extinct. Chances are the bright green insects would be killed.

2. Why did one color of walking stick become the dominant variety in the wood chip environment over five generations?

Brown walking sticks. They blended in best, so they were harder to click.

3.  Which walking stick was best adapted to each environment? How did you know?

Bright green did best in bush, green did best in bamboo, and brown did best in wood chips.

4. Based on the reading, Limiting Factors, which limiting factor or factors play a role in this model?  How do you know?

Well, lack of food for the walking sticks could be problematic, because even if no predator can see the sticks, the insects could still die of starvation. Without food, the population wouldn't be able to create new insects. Maybe stick insects can only reproduce or lay eggs in a certain place. Maybe brown stick insects lay white eggs that stand out like sore thumbs in wood chip environment, and so the insects need a white environment to hide their eggs. Or maybe the winter will wipe out the insects because they have no food, or no shelter, or no place to blend in.

UN Day Reflection

RLA: We recited the poetry that we had written in front of

Math: We had a decision-making simulation- ten people needed a liver transplant. Only four could be saved. Which ones?

PE: We took a bucket of water around the track twice, to show how hard gaining water is in third world countries.

Science: We acted out a disaster simulation, and learned some countries gain more help after a disaster than others.

Food Festival: Each kid brought a dish from their home country. We then tried it all!

Did you learn a new skill or discover an interest during UN Day?
Decision making! It's difficult, but it seems to be fun in some way. It's the arguing the that does it, but the ability to have a voice helps too.
During UN Day, did you hear, smell, or feel anything that surprised you?
There was a surprising amount of american, Korean, and indian foods. I didn't see much else. The variety of food was great, but the variety of home countries was not.

PSA Analysis

1. Child Suicide
2. Daniel Gvozden and the Non-Profit SAVE organisation.
3. Know the signs of suicide. Make sure you don't let your friends die.
4. Dramatic and Emotional. Unless there is a celebrity I don't recognize.
5. The PSA is a little long, and there isn't much surprise. If I saw this as a youTube Five-Seconds-to-Skip I wouldn't have seen it. In todays society, it isn't that good. There is also no humor, no shock, and a tiny bit of creativity. The creator has no actual credibility either, in fact.
6. No, I have never known anyone who even thought about committing suicide. But the school-oriented view does affect me a little, as I can relate to the surroundings.
